All this, he added, in a context in which effects of climate change they do nothing but “exacerbate existing vulnerabilities.”

For this reason, he urged “redouble efforts” to promote peace and at the same time providing aid to those who need it, taking into account that the majority of displaced persons and refugees land in developing areas, “those with the least resources.” What’s more, the coronavirus pandemic limited access to these communities, he said, the Europa Press news agency reported.

Last year closed with 82.4 million forcibly displaced, which means that in the first months of 2021 the figure has increased by 1.6 million more, which confirms an upward trend that is especially palpable in conflict zones and, above all, in African countries, said the UNHCR.

Of the 84 million registered, almost 51 million correspond to internally displaced persons, that is, to people who have been forced to leave their homes but who have not left their country, the agency said.

In the Democratic Republic of the Congo alone there are 1.3 million newly displaced, while in Ethiopia the data was around 1.2 million in the first half of 2021, he exemplified.

As for the refugees, the figure is also increasing and is already approaching the 21 million. According to UNHCR, most of the new refugees derive from conflict situations in five countries: Central African Republic (71.800), South Sudan (61.700), Syria (38.800), Afghanistan (25,200) and Nigeria (20.300).

Meanwhile, returns do not keep pace with displacements, since in the first half of 2021, barely a million internally displaced persons and fewer than 127,000 refugees returned home.
