Due to the increase in homicides, Bukele ordered since Wednesday night that the Armed Forces and the National Civil Police (PNC) carry out incursions in different parts of the country to contain this escalation, an action that is currently being maintained.
“We can announce that we have contained the rise in violence in recent days”, he assured, a day after ordering the raids.
Without mentioning specific names, Bukele said that after the escalation of violence there are gangs but “allied with new dark forces” that would be receiving “external financing.”
He assured that the police found “suitcases with large amounts of money, money that these criminal structures do not usually carry.”
“The (incursion) operations will continue until our country returns to the relative stability in which it was before this escalation of violence of these 3 days”added the president after considering that work will be done on “improving our intelligence and tracking equipment” in order to prevent a new escalation of homicides.
The Mara Salvatrucha and Barrio 18 gangs, among others, have some 70,000 members in El Salvador, more than 17,000 of them imprisoned, according to authorities, and operate through homicides, extortion, drug trafficking and other illegal activities.
El Salvador closed 2020 with 1,322 homicides, an average of 20 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, less than the 2,398 registered in 2019 and the lowest number since the end of the civil war in 1992, according to official data.
