The 72-year-old man from the Kirchdorf district set off at around 8.30 a.m. with his three grandchildren, aged 7, 9 and 13, for a hike from the Polsterstüberl car park in the Hinterstoder municipality towards the Prielschutzhaus. They got there at noon. After a long rest, they decided to descend via the Blosskogel and via a local “Jägersteig” in the direction of a forest road.
Forgot drinking water
But since they forgot to fill up the drinking bottles, they went back to the Prielschutzhaus. The 72-year-old, who walked a “Jägersteig” not far from the shelter about 20 years ago, which also led to the forest road, now tried to walk it again with the children. Unknowing that the Jägersteig has not been accessible for years, they still tried to find it. At around 3:50 p.m., when they could no longer make any progress on the extremely steep, pathless terrain, they made an emergency call.
13-year-old piloted helicopter
Six men from the Hinterstoder mountain rescue service, an alpine policeman and the crew of the police helicopter rushed to the scene. The 13-year-old girl was able to direct the police helicopter to her location via her mobile phone. The hikers could then be safely flown down into the valley with a variable rope.
