López Obrador ruled out Mexico’s entry into the BRICS: We are not going to participate

The president of Mexico, Andres Lopez Obradoraffirmed this Tuesday that his country will not form part of the economic group BRICSintegrated to Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, and that it will hold its next summit from 22 to 24 this month in Johannesburg.

“We are not going to participate in this bloc, in this association; of course we welcome other countries to do so; however, for economic reasons of neighborliness, for geopolitical reasons, we are going to continue strengthening the alliance of North America and all America”, said the head of state at a press conference.

The president referred to the Treaty Mexico, United States, Canada (T-MEC) that his country started in 1994 and his intention to promote this process of free trade to the entire American continent.

“This integration has to take place throughout the Americas to achieve something similar to what the European Union is in America, because we also have many things in common,” said.

This continental integration should focus, according to López Obrador, on achieving economic and commercial unity, the exchange of natural resources, technology, and the workforce.

“We have comparative advantages, we are very close, together and we are united by a long history,” he explained, according to the Sputnik news agency.

López Obrador considered that with the integration of Latin America and the Caribbean into the North American free trade process, the continent “would undoubtedly be the most important region in the world.”

The president confirmed that Foreign Minister Alicia Bárcena will travel to Washington tomorrow to talk with her counterparts in the Joe Biden government on issues related to migration and cooperation to attack the illicit trafficking of arms, drugs, and people.

“Our proposal is to strengthen the Treaty with the United States and Canada, consolidate them as a region, strengthen each other, help each other, complement each other, share investment, technology, the labor force, the skills of the workers of the three countries, that improve wages, and consolidate North America,” pointed out.
