The authorities had previously searched the water with drones, among other things, but did not see any sharks, as announced on Wednesday. Throughout the day, the sea off Rockaway Beach in the borough of Queens should continue to be searched with drones, boats and from the shore, it said. According to the authorities, a 65-year-old woman was bitten on the leg by a shark in the incident on Monday. She was taken to the hospital and is said to be in “critical but stable” condition. According to various databases, it was probably the first shark attack on a city beach in New York in decades, it was said. As a precaution, the beach was initially closed for one day on Tuesday.
In recent years, more sharks have been sighted in the Atlantic around the metropolis of New York and the offshore island of Long Island, partly because the water quality has improved. Shark attacks, however, remained rare.
