The agency pointed out that the pipeline allows to carry 200,000 cubic meters per day of fresh raw water from the basin of the san jose river to the Santa Lucia River and the new reservoir between the new dam of Belastiqui Pass and the catchment dam Current Water Plant, within the framework of the works to alleviate the water crisis Which affects Montevideo and surroundings.

This flow represents one third of the annual average daily flow of the Aguas Corrientes plant, as specified from SBI, while they indicated that the work “was built in record time” and assured that it is “the second in magnitude of collection, conduction and supply of raw water in the country, after Aguas Corrientes”.

The works implied the construction of 13.5 kilometers of transfer pipeline that connects the collection and pumping from the san jose river toward Belastiquí Pass, about him Santa Lucia River. Regarding its scope in the face of the water emergency, they specified that “the source of fresh water from the Santa Lucia Grande River and Severine Pass mixing with the water stored in the reservoir of Belastiquí Pass, ensuring a significant flow of raw water that must be supplied to the plant Running Waters”.

For all this, the agency indicated that “it will be essential to more efficiently manage the use of reserves of Severino Pass”. When making a comparison, they considered that the contribution of this work will represent 73 million cubic meters per year, slightly more than the total flow of the dam.

It will not be provisional, but “definitive and enduring”

After the inauguration, from SBI they ruled out the initial position that it is a provisional work to qualify it as “definitive and enduring”. Regarding the operation, the technical deputy manager of the organization, Jorge Minola, He stressed at a press conference that “when we have more pipes we will have more flow to carry”.

Minola also highlighted that the water mixture will depend on each day and the flow, but he specified that currently “Severine Step is contributing 18%”, in a context of improvement in the water Crisis, who had to mistreat Montevideo and the metropolitan area of Uruguay.
