On Wednesday, 84 of the 85 voting members of FC Wels voted in favor of a merger with WSC/Hertha starting next season. This was the next decisive step towards the hoped-for successful future in professional football. The two teams are currently still acting as syndicates with unwieldy names.
The SPG WSC Hertha/FC Wels is chasing goals in the Regionalliga Mitte. Yesterday’s game against Vöcklamarkt was still in progress when printing started. With the opposite name, SPG FC Wels/WSC Hertha 1b in the Upper Austria League meets Bad Schallerbach (17) away today. From 2024, not only should the club name be the same, but the management should no longer be divided between two board members.
In 2019, the majority was still against it
The goal is clearly defined: Bundesliga football should be played again in Wels. While in 2019 the majority had voted against merging the two clubs, this time almost everyone involved agreed. “There was a certain standstill on both sides. When we worked together, we realized that we all wanted the same thing,” says Stephan Holzleitner. The previous deputy cashier from WSC/Hertha is to drive forward the conversion plans as the new chairman of FC Wels. Support also comes from the previous FC Wels chairman Juan-Francisco Bohensky, who is now changing to the role of deputy. “It was clear to us: If Wels is to have a team in the Bundesliga, something has to happen,” says Bohensky. It is still unclear under which exact name the new Wels team will play in the future. The venue, on the other hand, has already been decided: In the future, football will be played in the current FC Wels facility in Wimpassing. For the time being, both teams need to end the current season on a positive note before the merger for the 2024/25 season takes place.
