The pensioner was no stranger to the officials from the region: Because he had often been driving in the past without a valid driver’s license, a patrol on Friday afternoon on Lagerhausstrasse in the Sierning municipality (Steyr-Land district) was called to the 65- year-old car driver from the Kirchdorf district.
The police officers gave chase. However, the 65-year-old ignored all attempts to stop: Despite the flashing blue lights and the subsequent horn tone, he stepped on the gas pedal and raced away through several towns and side streets. He crossed the B140 several times, causing dangerous situations with pedestrians and cyclists. The Bad Hall and Steyrtal patrols were called in for reinforcements.
The driver was able to lose the police for a short time, but when he tried to hide with his car on a sloping forest path to the Steyr River – a dead end – a police car from Sierning was able to prevent him from continuing his journey.
The man was arrested for the time being, but has since been released. The police said on Friday evening that he was reported to the authorities for numerous traffic offences, including fare evasion and refusal to carry out the alcohol test.
