At the VW plant in Hanover, the capital of Lower Saxony, there was reason to celebrate these days: a VW California with the characteristic pop-up roof rolled off the production lines for the 200,000th time. The popular recreational vehicle based on a station wagon has been built there for 35 years. In 2022 alone, 21,600 leisure vehicles were delivered – an increase of 15 percent compared to the pre-corona year 2019.
At the same time, the Lower Saxony provide a glimpse into the future of the camper van: the first teaser image shows that the new California will be based on the long version of the VW T7 Multivan. This means that the T6.1 currently in the range will finally have had its day.
In turn, it is also clear that the basis of the future “Hotel California” will thus be Volkswagen’s MQB platform. The T7 is also based on it. And that in turn means that the VW California will also be available as a plug-in variant from 2024.
This drive concept is particularly useful for the California: Firstly, the vehicle can be charged at the sockets available on campsites. Secondly, you can drive in, maneuver and drive off there quietly and without emissions. This, in turn, pleases the neighbors. (shoe)
