The minister of Labor and Social Security (MTSS), Pablo Mieres, referred to the decision of the PIT-CNT to pursue a plebiscite to modify the Constitution and thus establish a new social security reform in Uruguay; and maintained that the initiative will increase the deficit and impact revenue.
The plebiscite voted in the plenary session of the PIT-CNT was not well received in almost any sector of the government, neither the ruling party nor the opposition. already the president Luis Lacalle Pou had expressed himself in this regard yesterday, considering that “there is an announcement from a trade union center, which is within its rights, it does not surprise us because it has opposed almost everything the government has decided”. , ideological and in favor of a government policy that is responsible and whose reform has already had positive aspects”.
On this occasion, he was the owner of the MTSS who spoke about the referendum that the trade union central intends, and assured that the initiative would have a negative impact on the income that will cover retirement and pensions.
“It is hard for us to believe that the final position of the PIT-CNT may be this position,” he said. The hierarch indicated that “it was a divided vote” in which “there were different positions”, and said that he hopes to know the text of the constitutional amendment that would be submitted to a plebiscite.
“If these three measures that were announced were approved (elimination of the AFAP, cap the retirement age at 60 years and equate the minimum retirement to the minimum wage) clearly the social security system would go in the opposite direction to what all the parties in 2019 believed it should go,” he said, adding that the sum of such initiatives in “implies a increasing deficitincreasingly impressive, and therefore, with a revenue impact that must be arranged to cover retirement and pensions”.
Cosse, another Frente Amplista who distances herself
Aligning himself with another of the pre-candidates of the broad front, the mayor of Yamandú Orsi Cannelloni, and with the former president Jose Mujica, the mayor of Montevideo, Carolina Cosse. He also distanced himself from the PIT-CNT’s decision.
“All the front players think that social security reform is bad and it is detrimental to the country, there is unanimity that this must be changed. The how is another discussion, which seems tactical to me, and I am sure that the front members, who carry unity in our DNA, are going to find the appropriate formulation”, she maintained in this regard, when consulted by the plebiscite that seeks the trade union centre.
The departmental head commented at a press conference that she would like to “understand the vote better”: “I am not clear about it, I do not understand very well, I want to see what was voted for, because I understand that there are like three votes in one,” she said. With this she meant that the vote of the Representative Board of the PIT-CNT was divided: 16 votes in favor of the plebiscite that includes the elimination of the AFAP, 14 votes for promoting a referendum that implies repealing the reform, and 14 abstentions from the unions that preferred not to call any referendum.
“It is time for the front players not to rush and discuss in depth. I think that Uruguay does not have to rush in general. The reform is bad, we have to change it, we have to see how; how is a tactical issue, and how is tactical no need to hurry“, summarized.
