Poland will train soldiers to face the threat of migrants on the border with Belarus

Poland announced the creation of a working group to train the Army in the face of “pressure” from the arrival of migrants from Belarus who “threaten its border” and which, according to the Polish authorities, is “encouraged” by its neighboring country.

“There is no doubt that the Polish border is under threat. We are witnessing continuous pressure with numerous attempts by immigrants to cross illegally, who are encouraged by the Belarusian government,” Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak said.

The Polish official added that Belarus seeks to “destabilize” Poland, the Europa Press news agency reported.

The working group will be established in a temporary Army camp located in the border province of Podlaquia, Blaszczak said, adding that the measure also includes the formation of new reserves in case the situation worsens.

The Border Guard reported yesterday that a total of 105 migrants tried to cross into Polish territory from Belarus, while on Wednesday another group of 115 were detained at the border, the PAP news agency replied.

The announcement comes shortly after the Polish authorities announced that the additional military deployment on the border with Belarus was made up of 10,000 members who would be in charge of supporting the Border Guard and exercising “deterrence” tasks.

So far this year there have been more than 19,000 irregular crossing attempts at the border, 4,000 of them in July, according to data provided by the authorities.

Poland seeks to deal with a possible new wave of migration from Belarus in the midst of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and in the midst of tensions with the neighboring country due to the presence there of members of Wagner, the Russian mercenary group.

Last week, Poland denounced the incursion of two Belarusian helicopters in a violation of its airspace, accusations described as “preposterous” by the Belarusian Defense Ministry.

An unknown number of Wagner mercenaries have been in Belarus since Belarusian President Alexandr Lukashenko reached an agreement with them that ended a rebellion by the group’s leader Yevgeny Prigozhin and his fighters against Russia’s military leadership. At the end of june.

Wagner’s fighters fought alongside the Russian Armed Forces in Ukraine, and for months, Prigozhin accused the military hierarchy of the Defense Ministry of incompetence and insulted it.

On June 23, Wagner’s boss and his men left the Ukraine, seized a military base in a Russian town near the border, and from there began a march on Moscow, shooting down a Russian reconnaissance plane on the way.

The Russian authorities described the event as an armed uprising. The situation was resolved with the transfer of Prigozhin to Belarus under an agreement brokered by Lukashenko.
