The National Center for Artificial Intelligence (Cenia) of Chile launched this tool for the first time to find out the state of the regional situation in relation to AI.
He National Center for Artificial Intelligence (Cenia) of Chili threw the First Latin American Artificial Intelligence (AI) Indexand Uruguay positioned itself relatively well in the development and use of this technology in a regional scenario that revealed great inequalities.

With the support of organizations such as the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), the organization of american states (OAS), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and CAF-Bank of Development of Latin America, among others; For the first time, Cenia published a study aimed at becoming a common reference framework on artificial intelligence in Latin America.

The index seeks to measure and compare the performance by country in this area, make visible practices that allow the development of mutual exchanges and collaborations, as well as facilitate the monitoring of indicators and “building a regional AI future”.
According to the authorities of Cenia, this new tool will serve to show the best practices in artificial intelligence in the region, so that they can be more easily emulated, for a more prosperous and inclusive development. In this sense, it would include “enabling factors”, research and technology transfer data, information on public policies, regulations and promotion of high-impact initiatives in artificial intelligence. The index addresses more than 100 parameters in dimensions such as training, companies, research, investment and perception of the population.
How did Uruguay fare in the index?
According to the statistics that make up the Latin American Index of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Uruguay stands out in the region in the variable “availability, capacity and governance” of technologieslike Brazil and Chili —although the northern country is the most advanced and is positioned as the leader.
Uruguay also appears as more data centers, although it still does not have “supercomputers”, another box that only Brazil manages to have complete so far. This is one of the great problems of the region: although it has a great ability to collect datadoes not have it to process them, precisely due to the lack of adequate technology for it.
Another of the “musts” is the lack of AI talentTherefore, international organizations are supporting technological training initiatives on a larger scale; as well as the investment in relation to initiatives taking place in other parts of the world.
A relevant fact is that more and more regional AI authors and researchers decide to publish their knowledge in local environments instead of going to USA either Europe to do it. In addition to the fact that the field is becoming a interdiscipline.
AI application trends in this region are mainly seen in three great fronts: in the area of health, for the development of smart cities, and for forecasts of consumption of the electrical network.
