Merkel calls for a national effort to curb the new wave of Covid-19

“If we stick together, if we think about protecting ourselves and taking care of others, we can save much of our country,” added the German leader.

Germany is facing a fourth wave of Covid-19 in recent weeks, with a record number of infections.

This morning, the Robert Koch Health Institute reported more than 45,000 new positives and 228 deaths in the last day.

With 45,081 new infections, Germany is approaching five million (4,987,971) since the start of the pandemic and slowly approaching 100,000 deaths (97,617), according to the RKI.

The weekly incidence of cases per 100,000 inhabitants is now 277.4, almost triple that registered at the end of October.

The situation has led a group of 35 doctors and scientists from all over Germany to appeal today to national and regional authorities to change the management of the pandemic in order to break the fourth wave of infections.

In the appeal, published in the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger newspaper and the RND publishing network, the experts demand that the political establishment “live up to its broad responsibility”, instead of “waiting passively” and transferring the responsibility to break the fourth wave “to the possibilities of each individual,” reported the Europa Press news agency.

The scientists call for the creation of a national crisis team with experts in virology, medicine and public health, but also with professionals with management experience, coming for example from clinics or companies

Merkel, who is still in office, is being reluctant to take new measures until the new government takes office, although she does not stop insisting with her calls for the population to be vaccinated.

“Think about it” and take that step, said the German leader, who is in favor of the third dose of the vaccine, which she considers a “real opportunity to break the wave.”

About 67.4% of the population is fully inoculated, far from the target of 75%.

At the political level, the outgoing foreign minister said it was “urgent” that the federal government and the regions adopt “a unified approach” and, in particular, a “threshold value” from which additional measures should be taken.

Since last spring, the authorities no longer take into account only the number of new infections per day, but also the saturation of hospitals to activate new restrictions.

This threshold value should be “chosen wisely so that the necessary measures are not taken too late,” Merkel said.
