The sale of bottled water slowed down after the water truce

The survey showed a growth of 259% in the sales of bottled water if compared to July 2022, when the water crisis had not yet manifested. However, from the firm they clarified that “in the last days of July a slowdown in the growth rate was observed”, coinciding with the drop in salinity in the supply of SBI. In addition, the year-on-year increase was less than the 270% it had reached in June.

On the other hand, Scanntech revealed that last month the number of tickets that included bottled water in shops of Montevideo and Canelones, compared to the month of April, before the decree of the water emergency.

In fact, the category is the third with the highest ticket incidence in those departments, only surpassed by soft drinks and milk. Even the uruguayans they allocated 30% more of their budget to the purchase of bottles and drums, while the liters per ticket grew 40% on average.

The government maintains the subsidy for the vulnerable population

The drop in sales of this item occurs in the midst of a water truce, with tax exemption for the bottled water and after he Ministry of Social Development (Mides) decide to extend for another month the subsidy for the purchase of two liters per day for the population in a situation of socioeconomic vulnerability.

The decision has been in force since May 10 and had already been extended on June 16, it was given weeks ago within the framework of the water emergency. It will reach a total of 540,000 people, specified the head of the Mides, Martin Lema, who argued: “The water emergency and, therefore, it is coherent to maintain this support”.
