According to all indications, the incident in the gorge of Samaria was triggered by an earthquake that occurred in south-west Crete, Greek radio reported, citing the fire brigade. The civil defense called on all people in the region to leave the gorges in southern Crete immediately. There is a risk of rock falls.
The injured man was to be taken to a hospital by helicopter. It was initially unclear what nationality he was. According to the Geodynamic Institute of Athens, the earthquake had a magnitude of 4.9 and occurred at 10:40 a.m. local time (9:40 a.m. CEST). The center of the earthquake was in the popular holiday resort of Sougia in south-west Crete.
