The animals had escaped from their pasture and ran across the roadway. One of them even used the rescue lane in the wrong direction: “It was heading north for about 200 meters as a ‘ghost sheep’,” the police report said.

A motorcycle patrol spotted the two escapees and tried to drive them back towards the embankment. Meanwhile, the fire department secured the highway. However, the sheep were said to be moving very quickly and purposefully. Traffic on the A99 southbound was stopped completely for about 15 minutes and then speed was reduced in both directions.

The sheep eventually separated. One found a way into a corn field, the other ran back in the direction of the motorway, overcame the concrete sliding wall and used the emergency lane in the wrong direction as an escape route.

The emergency services could not have kept up with the speed of the sheep. The animal then found its way back up the embankment into the green “between the amused drivers,” who reacted calmly, it said. The owner of the two runaways has been identified and informed.
