Scenes like something out of an action film played out on the German A3, the Innkreis and Wels autobahns and the B137 during the night on Sunday: Several police patrols followed a car with flashing lights and a follow-up horn, which raced from Passau in the direction of central Upper Austria.

Passau police officers tried at around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday to stop the Frenchman for a traffic check on the A3 near Passau Süd. The 38-year-old stepped on the gas pedal and fled towards Austria at far too high a speed.

Escape ended on the B137

With his wild driving manoeuvre, the fugitive endangered uninvolved road users and the police officers several times. At speeds of up to 200 km/h, he raced over the A8 and the A25, exited the autobahn at Wels-Nord and continued his escape on the B137 in the direction of Bad Schallerbach.

The journey only ended in the municipal area of Schlüßlberg (district of Grieskirchen). A patrol car parked across the road forced the Frenchman to stop after a good 95 kilometers. He and his 33-year-old passenger were arrested for the time being.

No registration for vehicle

During the interrogation, the two men explained that they had fled from the police due to the lack of vehicle registration. They were reported to the Ried public prosecutor. No one was injured, police said on Sunday evening.
