A bone-dry lawn that keeps turning yellow? What worries many garden owners during the summer drought is said to be cause for pride for the people of far western Canada. Because there are now – after recently decreed restrictions on water consumption – prices for the ugliest lawn. Several communities in the Vancouver area have asked citizens to send or post photos of their dehydrated properties, Canadian media reported.

“We’re having a little fun doing it,” quoted CBC as saying Dave Kidd, Port Coquitlam public works manager. However, the authorities do not take a joke when someone continues to water their lawn despite a ban that has recently come into force. Then fines of up to 500 Canadian dollars threaten.
