More than 100 people were evacuated in the town of Bardonecchia, in northwestern Italy, which was invaded by a sea of mud, after the overflow of a river and landslides in the high mountainsproduct of strong storms, local authorities reported today.
“Some 120 people had to leave their homes due to the floods and were housed in special structures, installed in sports centers and hotels,” reported the Italian Red Cross (CRI).
“Likewise, the firefighters managed to rescue six other people, who had been trapped in a trailer dragged down the river,” the ANSA news agency reported.
The Italian commune of Bardonecchia is located in the province of Turin, belonging to the Piedmont region, northwestern Italy, the second largest region in the country, behind Sicily.
“The Bardonecchia police station is among the buildings most affected by the flood, five people were reported missing, but were later found safe and sound,” the official statement expanded.
“For now, it is certain that there are no victims of the tsunami of water and mud who invaded the town last night. The balance of damage is important, with a hundred displaced. More rainfall will arrive in the afternoon, the population is requested to move away from the bridges,” the local Turin newspaper, La Repubblica, published in its online edition.

In turn, the morning newspaper La Stampa, founded under the name “Gazzetta Piemontese” shows on its cover the aerial view of Bardonecchia, after the great wave of mud. “The fury of the water, tourists and neighbors on the run”.
“The damage is very significant, the rescuers continue their tireless work. Streets invaded by mud, new storm alarm,” said the governor of Piedmont, Alberto Cirio.
The Italian Deputy Prime Minister and also Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, promised that “the Government will support all efforts against the damage caused by the mud”, ANSA expanded.
