After other Muslim-majority countries, Algeria has now banned the hit film “Barbie” from cinemas. The film was canceled after two weeks for “violating morality,” news website 24H Algérie reported on Tuesday. The country’s cinema operators had already removed “Barbie” from the program without further explanation on Sunday.
The website TSA reported that the film had been “discreetly withdrawn from theaters”. The reason is “scenes intended for an adult audience” and allusions to homosexuality. Kuwait and Lebanon had already banned the successful film from cinemas last week. In Qatar, “Barbie” hasn’t even been released in cinemas, and there hasn’t been an official statement on the matter.
In the film by US director Greta Gerwig, Barbie and Ken, played by superstars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, leave the pink plastic world of Barbieland and get to know real life in Los Angeles. There are no open allusions to homosexuality in the strip.
