A female swan sustained serious injuries during a flight in the Innviertel: the animal got caught in a power line in the Schärding area and crashed. The crash pilot had to wait several days at the scene of the accident until she was found.

Employees of the Schärding Nature Conservation Union rescued the injured bird and called the Schabenreith animal paradise in Steinbach am Ziehberg (Kirchdorf an der Krems district) for help. The swan was taken to a renowned veterinary practice in Kirchdorf. The diagnosis: a wing fracture. In an emergency operation, the wing had to be amputated. The intervention was successful, the sanctuary announced on Wednesday.

“Walpurga”, as the swan was christened, is now recovering from the strain of her crash and the operation in the animal paradise of Schabenreith. Due to the serious injuries, a return to the wild is not possible, according to the animal keepers. The swan has found a new, safe home in the animal paradise of Schabenreith, which is home to more than 500 farm animals.
