Authorities had expressed concern about the possibility of a hospital collapse for the growing number of Covid-19 patients in the nation, which has a relatively low vaccination rate.
“It is our job as the Government of Austria to protect the people,” said the chief executive, Alexander Schallenberg, to journalists in Vienna.
“Therefore, we decided that, from tomorrow, there will be a lockdown for the unvaccinated,” he added, the state news agency APA reported.
The lockdown, which begins at midnight, will affect some 2 million people in this Alpine country of 8.9 million people,
The measure will initially last 10 days, and police will check the streets to see if people are vaccinated, Schallenberg said.
Only 65% of the Austrian population is fully vaccinated against Covid-19, a much lower rate than other nations in the European Union (EU).
In recent weeks, coronavirus cases have risen sharply.
The Ministry of Health today reported 11,552 new infections in the last 24 hours. A week ago, it had reported 8,554.
The cumulative weekly incidence in Austria is an exorbitant 775.5 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
In comparison, the weekly incidence in the neighboring Germany, which is also in alarm because it is registering a record of cases, is 298.
