The damage is greater than expected, as the SBB announced on Wednesday. Freight traffic is scheduled to roll again on August 23. Tourist traffic will continue to be diverted via the panoramic route.
There are still 16 derailed freight cars, some of which are badly damaged, in the tunnel. According to the SBB, investigations have shown “that the extent of the damage is significantly greater than assumed according to initial estimates”.
A total of eight kilometers of track and 20,000 concrete sleepers would have to be replaced. This work will take several months. SBB expects that both tunnel tubes will be open to traffic again without restrictions at the beginning of 2024.
