Storm damage: Train traffic in the Mühlviertel interrupted

Doomsday mood on Wednesday afternoon in the Mühlviertel: with gusts of wind, heavy rain, lightning, thunder and local hail, a short but violent thunderstorm came from the north over the Freistadt district. In Neumarkt im Mühlkreis, Waldburg and Freistadt, the local fire brigades responded to flooding and storm damage.

The track systems of the Summerauerbahn affected. “There is currently no train service between Kefermarkt and Freistadt,” said the ÖBB. A rail replacement bus service has been set up. The trains are now running again, the railway said at around 8:30 p.m.

A severe weather warning is in effect for large parts of Upper Austria until Wednesday evening, 10 p.m. In the early evening there was thunder and lightning in the Vöcklabruck area: In Steinbach am Attersee and Gampern, fire brigades were deployed at around 7 p.m. for flooding operations. More thunderstorms were also brewing over the Czech Republic, moving in the direction of Austria. Small-scale floods, mudslides, damage from storms and hail cannot be ruled out, according to meteorologists.

Already on Tuesday evening heavy thunderstorms called for Upper Austria’s fire brigades. 116 fire brigades went on 90 missions, mainly the Salzkammergut and the district of Kirchdorf an der Krems were affected on the holiday.
