Mette-Marit and Haakon – Norway’s heir to the throne connects a story like in a fairy tale. The couple met at a music festival in Kristiansand, southern Norway. At the time, the young commoner was anything but the “perfect daughter-in-law.”
Her parents were divorced, she herself had a fondness for parties and an illegitimate son from a previous relationship. That was too much even for the otherwise quite tolerant Norwegians. But Haakon refused to give up his great love – the engagement followed at the end of 2000, and the wedding on August 25, 2001.
A very special date for the royals, who will also celebrate their birthdays at a big “backyard party” at the Oslo court on this day. Crown Prince Haakon turned 50 on July 20, and Mette-Marit will be tomorrow, August 19.
Natural beauty
Haakon and Mette-Marit have two children together: Princess Ingrid Alexandra (19) and Prince Sverre Magnus (17). They present themselves as a modern, down-to-earth and very active family. In their free time, the royals spend a lot of time outdoors – skiing in winter, hiking or water sports in other seasons.
When it comes to fashion, the princess keeps it simple and attaches great importance to matching accessories. She also prefers natural make-up: As the Italian “Vogue” reports, the “Cosmo Beauty” brand is one of her absolute favorites – which triggered a real hype about the cosmetics label in Norway. A waiting period of several months is now mandatory if you want to have an appointment at the company’s beauty spa in Oslo.
When you see Mette-Marit beaming, you might think her world is light and carefree – but even a crown princess is not spared from strokes of fate. In 2018 she was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis. In this chronic disease, the lungs are attacked by inflammation, and those affected suffer from shortness of breath, coughing and shortness of breath.

Mette-Marit broke the news to her compatriots in her own way: full of strength, she spoke publicly on television about her failing health. After long complaints, she was happy to finally know what had been going on with her body in the past few years, she said. Since then, it has happened from time to time that Mette-Marit takes a step back and cancels appointments – but nothing has changed in the appearance of the princess.
The Crown Princess is looking forward to her 50th birthday tomorrow. “I don’t think that much will change overnight because you turn 50.” (had)
