At the meeting in the Ghanaian capital Accra, the option of military intervention in the country to restore constitutional order is still on the table. So far, however, ECOWAS has emphasized that it wants to do everything for a diplomatic solution.
ECOWAS, along with the African Union, the European Union and the United Nations, is calling for the immediate release of the legitimate Nigerien President Mohamed Bazoum, who has been under house arrest since the July 26 coup. However, the putschists announced on Sunday that they wanted to bring charges against Bazoum for high treason. ECOWAS reacted with outrage, saying that this was a provocation and prevented a peaceful solution.
