With the different projects that are advancing in the country in this matter, the government projects that from 2030 hydrogen will be installed in the local market.
Uruguay is ready to start production green hydrogen in the national territory and, according to the joint estimates of the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Mining (MIEM) and of the National Administration of Fuel, Alcohol and Portland (Ancap)in ten years this alternative could be obtained in the country’s service stations.

The “Green Hydrogen Route” raised by the government begins to take shape in the country, especially after the announcement of the important investment of 10 million dollars for him H2U4 projectwhich contemplates the construction of a hydrogen plant in Paysandu, that will be supplied with the first station “hydrogenerates” and whose production will be destined for export.

Along these lines, the head of the MIEM, Omar Paganini, explained that the entire production of this clean “Off Shore” fuel in Uruguayan waters will be exported to Europe as pointed out by the specialized media Surtidores; where the markets have already shown their interest in the country’s renewable energies, to the point of having signed a memorandum that favors investments from the Old Continent oriented to this business in the national territory.
However, the government also confirmed that the “On Shore” production could be destined for the local market“especially for the heavy transport of cargo and buses”, specified the minister.
Green hydrogen at local pumps
As has already been noted on previous occasions, the arrival of the green hydrogen to the country as a fuel for massive use will not imply changes in the system of traditional service stations —of fossil fuels—, since the process of recharging the tanks is practically identical in both cases.
This will, in turn, make the adaptation of dispensers to models for green hydrogen be much simpler and that, together with the progress of the production of clean fuel in the country, its supply can be projected in an accessible way for the entire population in a span of about 10 yearsaccording to Surtidores.
By then, moreover, it is expected that the price of green hydrogen drop considerably, thanks to a cut in production costs which would take them up to 2 or 3 dollars per kilogram, according to Ancap sources consulted by the specialized media. Currently, the value of this fuel is around 9.5 euros per kilo at the pump, according to data from you hydrogenate installed in Hamburg, Germany.
