Record champions Bayern Munich made a successful start to the new season of the German Bundesliga: A week after the sobering 0:3 in the Supercup against Leipzig, the Munich team clearly won 4:0 at Werder Bremen – and Harry Kane played a key role in that.
It took England’s captain just four minutes to score his first goal in his starting XI debut. He sent Leroy Sane down from the first half, who made it 1-0 (4th).
The Bremen team around captain Marco Friedl brought the ball under Bayern goalie Sven Ulreich for the first time just five minutes later. Niclas Füllkrug scored with a header, but the goal scored by the top scorer from the previous season didn’t count due to an offside position (9′). Bayern then squeezed the home team in their half and found a few more opportunities before the break. Jamal Musiala narrowly missed the goal after dribbling at speed (18′) and Noussair Mazraoui’s shot grazed the left post (21′). In addition, a poor shot by Goretzka from a long distance caused Pavlenka problems (34′).
Bremen came out of the dressing room with momentum after a manageable first half. Leonardo Bittencourt from close range (47th) and Vollkrug by volley (49th) missed promising opportunities. On the other side, Kingsley Coman flicked the ball onto the post (58′). Bremen goalkeeper Jiri Pavlenka prevented Kane’s premiere goal with a save (61st). The game developed into an open exchange of blows in front of 42,000 spectators.
Kane’s 2-0 broke Bremen’s resistance
Kane scored the knockout blow: After a pass from Alphonso Davies, the 30-year-old scored to make it 2-0 (74th). In the final phase, Konrad Laimer also made his first Bundesliga appearance for Bayern and was able to celebrate two more goals: Sane initially scored from close range (90th) after Thomas Müller’s preparatory work, before Mathys Tel scored the final score with a sharp finish fixed (94th).
“I was a little nervous,” admitted Kane after the final whistle. “But when the game started, the butterflies in my stomach were gone. It was a beautiful evening.”
