At least seven dead and 90 wounded in Russian missile attack on Ukrainian city of Chernigov

KIEV, Aug 19 (Reuters) – Seven people were killed, including a 6-year-old boy, and 90 wounded when a Russian missile hit a central square in the northern Ukrainian city of Chernigov, it said on Saturday. the Ministry of the Interior.

People were on their way to church to celebrate a religious holiday when the impact struck, the ministry said, adding that 12 of the injured were children and 10 were policemen.

“A Russian missile hit right in the center of the city,” President Volodimir Zelensky, who was visiting Sweden, posted on Telegram. “A normal Saturday, which Russia turned into a day of pain and loss.”

A short video accompanying Zelensky’s post showed debris strewn across a plaza in front of a theater, where parked cars were badly damaged.

Chernigov is a city of leafy boulevards and centuries-old churches located about 145 km north of the capital, kyiv.

Russia has attacked Ukrainian cities far from the front line with missiles and drones as part of the invasion it launched in February last year.
