MOSCOW, Aug 19 (Reuters) – The Russian Defense Ministry reported a wave of Ukrainian drone strikes on Saturday against the Moscow, Novgorod regions northwest of the capital and Belgorod on the border with Ukraine.
There were no injuries in the attacks, but the drone aimed at the Novgorod region damaged a warplane and started a fire at a military airfield. The Novgorod region is hundreds of kilometers from the border with Ukraine.
“As a result of the terrorist attack on the territory of the airfield, a fire broke out in the aircraft parking lot, which was quickly brought under control by firefighters. One plane was damaged,” the ministry said in a statement.
He later reported that air defense forces had jammed a drone on the northwestern outskirts of Moscow, causing it to crash.
Drone air strikes on the territory of Russia have increased in recent months. On Friday, a drone crashed into a central Moscow building after air defenses brought it down, disrupting air traffic at all civilian airports in the capital.
The Defense Ministry also reported a foiled drone attack on Saturday in the Belgorod region, which now sees such incidents on an almost daily basis. It caused no casualties or damage, he added.
Overnight, Russian air defense forces also shot down a missile launched by Ukraine over the Crimean peninsula, the Defense Ministry said. Crimea, annexed by Russia from Ukraine in 2014, has also seen a rise in drone and missile attacks.
Ukraine does not usually comment on who is behind the attacks against Russian territory or Crimea, although officials have publicly expressed their satisfaction with these episodes. (Reuters reporting, writing by Gareth Jones. Editing in Spanish by Javier Leira)
