It is time that Minister of Education Martin Polaschek (ÖVP) “fulfilled his responsibility and no longer passed it on to the families affected by inflation,” appealed SPÖ education spokeswoman Petra Tanzler.

The summer school, which takes place in the last two weeks of summer vacation, starts tomorrow, Monday, in Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland. Around 33,000 children and young people have registered this year, compared to around 39,000 in the past two years. It is a thorn in the side of the Social Democrats that the number of registrations for the summer school is falling while expenditure on private tutoring is rising. They ask for an evaluation.

The party wants a model in which children can spend part of their vacation carefree despite being checked. In the last week of school, teachers should help in remedial lessons to divide up the learning material and to create a timetable for learning. Finally, the summer school is to be expanded and expanded to include an explicit offer for pupils with a re-examination – because the summer school is currently not explicitly designed to prepare for the re-examination. The focus is on project-oriented teaching that should stand out from everyday school life. Each student must be given an individual learning offer in the respective subject, which takes place in the two weeks before the re-examination. As is already the case, the teachers who are deployed should either receive 50 euros per lesson or be entitled to time off in lieu.

In addition, tutoring should be free of charge for all students throughout the year, is the medium-term goal of the SPÖ. In the 2022/2023 school year, parents would have spent a total of 121.6 million euros on private tutoring – an increase of 18 percent compared to the previous year. 167,000 and thus 17 percent of the students took advantage of paid tutoring in the school year or in the summer before. Models for measures can be found in Vienna, Burgenland or Traiskirchen, where party leader Andreas Babler is mayor. “It’s unacceptable for the states and communities to do the work of the Minister of Education,” criticized Tanzler.
