The reserves of Severine Pass more than 7 million cubic meters grew in one day and the salinity of the water remained well below the limits allowed by the Ministry of Public Health (MSP), which configures a very positive scenario within the framework of the water crisis that put in check Montevideo and the metropolitan area of Uruguay.

The runoff from the rains recorded in recent days allowed the flow of Severine Pass increase, reaching 23,082,000 cubic meters, compared to 14,649,518 cubic meters yesterday and strengthening a scenario of improvement in the capital and surroundings.

This was verified in the daily report of Presidency, which also registered a notable improvement in the salinity. It is that the sodium values were between 56 and 73, while those of chloride were between 33 and 65, well below the levels of previous days and even further from the limit authorized by the MSP, which will remain the same in the coming weeks and is 720 milligrams for chloride and 440 for sodium.

Under these circumstances, the optimistic forecasts of the President Luis Lacalle Pou, who maintained last week that, whether it rains or not, “there is good quality water” guaranteed until the end of September. However, it rained heavily and the president’s estimate is insufficient, since the quality of the water seems to be assured for a longer time.

The impact of the water crisis on the industry

The water emergency had a fiscal impact of 50 million dollars in the country, according to the estimates of the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF). To this must be added another type of negative consequences for the productive areas.

The Director of Economic Policy of the MEF, Marcela Bensión, He maintained in dialogue with the weekly Búsqueda that the fiscal impact was 50 million dollars for the government and projected a figure close to 100 million dollars within the framework of the Water Emergency Fund.

Another sector hit was the Industrial production, with several companies that saw their production affected and others, such as the Cannelloni Refrigerator, They had to stop their activities. Tourism did not escape the situation either, with cancellations in some hotels and fewer reservations due to media coverage of the phenomenon in other countries and even sayings such as those of the Argentine President Alberto Fernandez who at one point pointed out that in Montevideo “they open the faucets and the water does not come out”.
