Eight people, some seriously injured, were involved in a rear-end collision on the A1 west autobahn on Sunday night near Eggendorf (Linz-Land district). At around 3.30 a.m., a Romanian minibus full of seven people drove into a delivery van driving in front of it (nachrichten.at reported).

The impact must have been very violent. The minibus may have overturned and remained lying on its side. The side wall of the van was torn out. She was found 200 meters behind the vehicle.

The emergency services were presented with a desolate picture: over a distance of several hundred meters there was debris on the motorway, including luggage, household items and even a washing machine.

The seven occupants of the minibus were able to free themselves from the wreckage on their own. They sustained minor injuries in the accident. The driver of the van, however, had to be removed from his vehicle. According to the emergency services, he was unresponsive. He was taken to Wels Hospital with serious injuries.

The west autobahn had to be closed for two and a half hours while the injured were being treated, the clean-up work was being carried out and the two injured were being rescued.

Captured and killed

Just 20 hours earlier – as reported – there had been a fatal rear-end collision on the western autobahn in the Oed area (district of Amstetten).

At first, the accident seemed to go smoothly. The two drivers involved initially stopped at the hard shoulder. But when a passenger with Turkish citizenship got out to set up a breakdown triangle, he was hit by another vehicle and killed. After that, there were several subsequent accidents in which five other vehicles were involved. The A1 had to be temporarily closed in the direction of Salzburg. A 13 km long traffic jam formed.

It is not yet clear which of the cars involved in the accident hit the Turk. The police have therefore started forensic investigations and expect a result by noon today.
