In the oldest salt mine in the world, high above Hallstatt, it is eight degrees Celsius all year round. Visitors of all ages can immerse themselves in the 7,000-year history of Hallstatt salt mining via a 64-metre-long miner’s slide. Anyone who wanders through the tunnels and runs their hands over the roughly hewn stone walls will feel the breath of a bygone era. In the Bronze Age cinema, lifelike animations bring the miners’ hard working day to life. The tour of the mine lasts around 90 minutes, and the Salzbergbahn takes visitors comfortably up to the high valley (www.salzwelten.at).
