The two Romanians stopped the 35-year-old, who was driving his car in the Unterach area late Monday afternoon, at a bus stop. They had a breakdown and urgently needed cash, they told the helpful driver, could he not exchange Romanian lei for euros? The 35-year-old allowed himself to be persuaded and drove with the couple to a bank, where he withdrew several hundred euros and exchanged them for lei.
Some time later, however, he became suspicious and began to research the Internet. He noticed that the certificates he had been given have not been valid since 2006 and are therefore worthless. The surveys are ongoing, the police said on Monday evening.
