Lula endorsed Argentina’s entry into the BRICS and expectations grow for a definition

The Brazilian President, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silvasupported this Tuesday the expansion of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) and, specifically, the incorporation of Argentina, which in his opinion could help that country to overcome its serious economic crisis.

“I defend that the brothers of Argentina can participate in the BRICS. We are going to see how it turns out in the meeting”, but “it is very important that Argentina is in the BRICS“, affirmed the progressive president in his weekly broadcast through social networks.

The head of state has already tried to help Argentina financially through the group’s development bank, but the regulations of said entity prevented him from doing so.

However, the leader of the Workers’ Parties (PT) insisted that “it is possible to help” Argentina, being a member of the BRICS, which would propose a “more serene, mature and less pragmatic” strategy as established in today’s rules, “that only favor the financial system.”

In this sense, he redoubled his criticism of the International Monetary Fund (IMF)of which he criticized that it only manifests itself “when there are crises in small countries in Africa and Latin America”, when what it should do “is help”.

He denounced that with the IMF loans, the debtor country “remains imprisoned” and “cannot get out”, and he brought up the case of Argentina again.

Lula thus alluded to the loan of 44,000 million dollars that the IMF granted to the management of the conservative Mauricio Macri (2015-2019) and that the current government of the Peronist Alberto Fernández inherited, which “now has to pay for it” in a context of runaway inflation , shortage of foreign currency and a severe drought that has hit its economy even more.
