What does the forest of the future in Austria look like? Which tree species will grow and which will not? How will the wild animals live? And what can forest managers do to keep forests healthy?
These topics and some more are the focus of the Austrian Federal Forests at the beginning of September. In a total of 18 free forest tours, foresters and nature guides show all those interested in nature what damage climate change has already caused in the forests, follow the tracks of the bark beetle and explain on site which tree species are best able to cope with the climatic conditions of the future. The forestry service Steyrtal invites you to this information day on Friday, September 1, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the peace community of St. Ulrich. The approximately three-hour tour is led by Sebastian Wieland. The meeting point is at Gasthof Schoiber am Damberg.
The Steyrtal forestry operation is characterized by great locational contrasts. The palette ranges from barren and steep limestone areas to fertile flysch soils with gentle terrain. Drought, the forest pest bark beetle and the widespread dying of ash trees are already putting the forests under great pressure. In the guided tour through the forests near Steyr, we go together to catch bark beetles. It is clearly shown what damage the insect, which is only a few millimeters in size, can cause. It also explains why some tree species in the region will not be able to cope with future conditions and why the silver fir should be more common in the forest of the future. Young trees, which grow back naturally, also play an important role, and with it a wild population that the ecosystem can tolerate. The Federal Forests point out ways in which forests can be left in their natural state and made rich in food for wild animals that are also affected by climate change.
An online registration is absolutely necessary. The tour takes place from five people and is limited to twenty participants. All information at www.wald-der-zukunft.at
