Lacalle Pou signed the end of the water emergency

After the rains of recent days and the significant recovery of OSE reserve levels for the metropolitan area, the president decreed the end of the emergency.

President Luis Lacalle Pou signed a decree lifting the water emergency in Montevideo and the metropolitan area of Uruguay, affected by the water crisis that generated the worst drought of the last century. Among the arguments to put an end to the state of emergency that began on June 19, the latest rainfall that allowed the recovery of the flow of the main reserves that supply the contemplated areas is pointed out.

the intense rainy in recent days, mainly concentrated in the southern part of the country, managed to considerably reverse a panorama of water crisis which lasted for several months in the metropolitan area. To such an extent that the president Lacalle Pou decided to put an end to the water emergency decreed for just over two months.

The decree signed by the head of state indicates that since June 19 “various measures have been adopted for the purpose of maintain the water supply to the population”. And that “the latest rainfall in the region allowed the courses and the main water reserves used to supply the population to have recovered part of its flow”.

“For this reason, given the current scenario, it is considered appropriate and convenient to annul” the decree that started the exceptional situation in Montevideo and the surrounding towns, says the resolution signed by the president, which adds that, consequently , it is determined “the cthat of the water emergency”.

The Santa Lucía River has already recovered 100%

In parallel, the water crisis seems to finally give up with the Santa Lucía River, which managed to reach 100% of its capacity thanks to the heavy rains last week, from the Uruguayan Institute of Meteorology (Inumet) ensured that the accumulated Severine Pass is 81.6 mm, while that of St. Lucia 84.8mm.

Last week’s rainfall has accumulated 92.8 mm, a value that, according to the latest report on rainfall prospects for the Santa Lucia and Rio de la Plata basins from Inumet, managed to reach a value that reaches 100% of normal for this period, using as a reference the climatology of 1981-2010”.

“On a timely basis, it rained 81.6 mm on the Paso Severino dam and on Santa Lucía (close to running waters) it rained 84.8 mm”, establishes the report, which also foresees that the precipitations of the last hours will further increase the records of the basins.
