The girl fell shortly before 8.30 p.m. while playing with another child in the twelve meter deep shaft. The mother’s partner climbed behind and kept the nine-year-old afloat until emergency services arrived. The girl was taken to the University Hospital in Krems with minor injuries, said police spokesman Johann Baumschlager.
According to the police, the accident happened during a visit to another family. “The well shaft was only covered by two styrofoam panels about five centimeters thick,” said Baumschlager. The alarmed fire brigade first freed the child and then the man. According to ORF Lower Austria, he was also transported to the hospital with minor injuries. According to the spokesman, further surveys were ongoing. Among other things, it will be checked whether the duty of supervision has been breached.
