INNER QUARTER. Enthusiasm for old vehicles was the driving force behind the founding of the new “Inn-Salzach-Classic” club. The name says it all: some owners of historic vehicles have joined forces and are now holding what will probably be an annual classic trip. The premiere of the two-day “Inn-Salzach-Classic” is on Saturday and Sunday, September 16th and 17th, the OÖN are media partners. The exit is already a hit: the number of registrations “goes through the roof”, says club chairman Klemens Steidl.
Steidl, WK-Braunau chairman and classic car fan, has himself driven in numerous classic rallies for years. “It’s not about police, it’s about regularity and special tests of all kinds. There are classic rallies like this all over Austria and other European countries. The basic idea is that our region has a lot to offer and we do this together with our series of events want to show the tourism association s’Entdeckerviertel.” His board colleagues also have petrol in their veins: On board are Josef Leimer from Helpfau-Uttendorf, mayor’s spokesman with a lot of motorsport experience, Franz Voggenberger from Friedburg (Lengau), master mechanic and workshop owner, and Christian Kirchsteiger, also with motorsport experience. The managing director of the tourism association s’Entdeckerviertel, Georg Bachleitner, brings tourism know-how with him.
New, affordable format
The first exit starts in Helpfau-Uttendorf, and the routes lead south towards Flachgau, through the Innviertel and over the Bavarian border. All vehicles built up to 1993 are permitted. It is important to the organizers that participation is affordable, the “Inn-Salzach-Classic” is by no means aimed at profit. The registration fee is only 60 euros, which is comparatively little. “We don’t want to copy an event, we really want to stage a new format with affordable participation and a duration of at least two days. As it stands, with the current level of registrations, we could possibly become the most important multi-day event after the ‘Mühlviertel Classic’ in Upper Austria -Classic exit event,” says the chairman, who himself will drive a tried and tested Triumph TR6 that is more than 50 years old. Steidl is particularly fascinated by the history of the individual car brands. “When you read into the history of individual manufacturers, you are so captivated that you can’t let go. In addition, the technology of that time can still be found – or again – in the most modern cars of today. It is remarkable how sophisticated and simple technology was used back then and it still works today. There just aren’t any diagnostic testers, you have to study your car here,” says Steidl.
