The $ 1.2 trillion project will help fix bridges and roads, change water pumps, build a charging network for electric vehicles and expand internet broadband.
“We heard countless speeches … but today we finally got this done,” Biden told hundreds of guests, including members of the Republican opposition, at the White House.
“My message to the American people is this: America is moving again and its life is going to change for the better,” he promised.
The bill is “proof that Democrats and Republicans can unite for results”, I consider. “We believe in each other and we believe in America.”
Biden had to fight for months to get enough votes from his divided Democratic Party, risking humiliating failure.
“We agreed that this would be a truly bipartisan process,” Sen. Rob Portman, a Republican from Ohio, said at the White House meeting.
Despite some Republicans reaching out, most of the opposition party is in no mood to declare a truce. Far-right Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Trump advocate, called her 13 supporters who voted alongside Democrats “traitors.”
The White House hopes the signing of the bill will give Biden new impetus, the largest government investment of its kind since the creation of the national highway network in the 1950s.
A $ 1.75 billion package for childcare, education and other social expenses is still pending.
Internal divisions among the Democratic parties are holding it back and the proposal does not have any Republican support. However, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Democrat Nancy Pelosi, believes that “hopefully this week” they will pass the bill.
