Solar system on the cinema car park provides electricity for 400 households

The largest parking lot PV system in Upper Austria

CATFISH. After the Regau and Tumeltsham-Ried locations, the Star Movie in Wels has now also received a parking lot solar system: 1804 modules mounted on supports above the parking areas will supply 900,000 kilowatt hours per year in future – this corresponds to four times the annual electricity consumption of the cinema or that from around 400 households. “We are making a contribution to the local energy transition. The covered free parking spaces are an additional benefit for our cinema guests,” says Star Movie Managing Director Hans-Peter Obermayr.

The system is scheduled to go into operation by the end of the year and from then on it will supply the cinema and restaurants as well as surrounding companies with electricity. According to the company, 300,000 tons of CO2 are saved per year, and the investment costs amount to around 1.2 million euros.

The advantage of such PV carport systems is that no additional surfaces have to be sealed. That is why they are also being pushed by the state of Upper Austria in its PV strategy. Star Movie has been working on becoming more sustainable for ten years: The Star Movie cinemas have reduced their electricity consumption by 26 percent through measures such as switching to LED lighting and energy-saving projectors.
