The thunderstorms of last night were not surprising, says meteorologist Alexander Ohms of Geosphere Austria. He predicted it yesterday. But: “You can only estimate the intensity two to three hours in advance.” The thunderstorms form in France and Germany and then move to Upper Austria. Some of the thunderstorm cells don’t propagate that far east. “Then the wind is noticeable, but not as strong,” says Ohms. Other cells are more durable. Pressure waves with strong gusts of wind, which, like last night, occasionally reach more than 100 km/h, are classic.

Enjoy summer temperatures with caution

The weekend starts off like summer again: Today will be hotter again with more than 30 degrees Celsius, tomorrow the maximum temperatures will be a muggy and warm 25 to 29 degrees. “The air mass is still warm and heats up quickly as soon as the sun comes out,” says the meteorologist. Nevertheless, the temperatures, especially at the lake and on the mountain, have to be treated with caution: the weather is no longer as stable as in the past few days, from the afternoon on Friday and Saturday thunderstorms will move in from the west and from the mountains. “So don’t be surprised if there’s thunder and lightning in the middle of the night, that can happen again and again,” says Ohms.

On Sunday, too, the temperatures will rise to 27 degrees with a foehn wind, but a cold front will reach Upper Austria by night at the latest. The risk of thunderstorms is averted. On Monday and Tuesday it will be cool with a maximum of 17 degrees, it will rain again and again. Temperatures could rise to 20 degrees as early as Wednesday. If the trend towards an improvement in the weather continues, it will be friendlier again in the second half of the week, with temperatures above 25 degrees.

Last time over 30 degrees

“Friday is probably the last 30s of the year. There are no more heat waves in September, so we have to be happy when we get back to 25 degrees,” says the meteorologist. Despite the cold start to August, it has been a little warmer this month than the long-term average. “Up until August 12, all days were below average, since then it has always been too warm. Only this week did the positive deviation gain the upper hand,” says Ohms.
