On August 27, between 12:20 p.m. and 12:35 p.m., the north portal of the tunnel will be closed in the direction of Hallstatt. “We want to urgently draw attention to the intolerable traffic situation and the associated fatal rush of tourists to Hallstatt,” says the Hallstatt Citizens’ List, which organized the protest. The unusual time was chosen in order to burden Postbus, locals and rush-hour traffic as little as possible.

10,000 tourists a day

The 750 inhabitants of the Dachstein community are confronted with up to 10,000 tourists per day during the high season, many day visitors travel by car. The parking lots are often already full in the morning. After that, many guests park wildly, the police speak of 1,700 ads since the beginning of June. Members of the Bürgerliste report that locals are regularly insulted and threatened by illegal parkers and foot tourists, and that even the rescue services have gotten stuck in a traffic jam in the tunnel. The Bürgerliste is also concerned about the forthcoming Capital of Culture year: “If action is taken now, even more chaotic conditions can be expected in all areas.”

A meeting between representatives of the municipality, tourism and the population has been arranged for September 9th. The goals are better tourist guidance and a better traffic solution. However, it is not the first attempt by the Hallstatters to get some rest. There is considerable doubt in the town that the patent solution will be found this time.
