Austria’s track and field athletes missed the fifth World Cup medal in their history by 54 centimeters: Javelin thrower Victoria Hudson finished fifth in the final in Budapest with 62.92 meters. Gold went superiorly to the Japanese Haruka Kitaguchi, who caught the Colombian Flor Denis Ruiz Hurtado (65.47) in the last attempt (66.73). Australia’s Mackenzie Little took bronze (63.38).

As in the qualification, which Hudson finished fourth overall with 62.96, the 27-year-old showed no signs of stage fright in the decision. She opened with 59.08 – the resulting fifth intermediate place after the first run gave her security. As a result, Hudson went up to 62.14, which put her on course for a medal until her rivals attacked. The red-white-red surprise woman, who, like discus thrower Lukas Weißhaidinger, is looked after by Gregor Högler, improved to 62.92 in the fourth attempt – but that wasn’t enough in the end.
