A white man shot three black men and then took his own life in a Jacksonville store, Florida, United States. The county sheriff, TK Waters, confirmed that it was a racial hate crime.
“The shooting was racially motivated and I hated black people”, Waters said at a news conference, adding: “He wanted to kill blacks.” The shooter was wearing a military vest and was carrying a rifle and a pistol. The sheriff confirmed that, after killing the three people, the man took his own life. “He was, frankly, a madman who decided that he wanted to end the lives of others,” Waters added, in statements collected by NBC.

Edward Waters University, located near the scene of the incident, issued a warning for people to remain on campus, although it noted that no university students or staff were apparently involved in the shooting.
“Our campus police have secured all facilities. The students will remain in their residences during the afternoon until the place is cleared.”the alert said. At the scene of the shooting there was a strong police deployment, with special Swat intervention teams, while a helicopter flew over the area.
