The only thing that seemed clear to the investigators on Monday was that the dead person must have been there for some time. According to police spokesman Philipp Haßlinger, a closer assessment was not possible, the body showed clear signs of animal damage. The investigators are hoping for more information from the autopsy, which is scheduled to take place this week.
The identity of the dead person was unclear on Monday – not even the gender could be clearly determined. The location and the situation in which the skeletonized corpse was found raised the suspicion that it was a homeless person, “but so far that’s also just a guess,” said Hasslinger. Without an identity, one cannot make any reliable statements. The police spokesman confirmed that the skeleton was partially in a sleeping bag.
Crime or Animal Eating?
Nothing could be said about the cause of death before the autopsy. According to Haßlinger, it is by no means certain that it was a violent crime. The condition of the corpse could also be due to animal eating. If it was a crime, based on the evidence, death by being killed would be the most likely possibility, but the hole in the skullcap could also have been caused by an animal.
Speculations after murder cases in the homeless milieu
The police spokesman rejected speculation that it could be another victim in the series of sometimes fatal attacks on the homeless. “It would be premature to establish a connection with the murders in the homeless environment,” he said. The three cases of attacks on homeless people in public spaces so far were knife attacks. Two of them ended fatally. Even if one assumed a violent death of the man on the Wienerberg, he would not have been stabbed as things currently stand. That in turn would be a major departure from the modus operandi of the three cases.
