Sales of services and shops, stagnant in the second half

The Chamber of Commerce and Services published a report where sales fell not only on the coast but also on the coast and northeast of Uruguay.

In the second half of the year, sales of services and shops stagnated in the Uruguay, not only in the littoral region, but also on the coast and in the northwest, where experienced a fall 0.1% if compared to last year.

“While at the beginning of the year only sales fell in the littoral region, for the second quarter the regions of the coast and the northeast joined the contractive scenario ”, establishes the report that surveyed 873 stores of 501 companies throughout Uruguay. With this, the report established a activity stagnation in the second semester. The report establishes that, of a total of 20 items analyzed, 14 of them decreased in sales and 6 grew.

Regarding the regions, while in Montevideo sales of services grew by 1.1%, those from the interior of the country decreased by 4.1%. On the other hand, in commerce there was an activity growth of 1.3% in Montevideo and a fall in the interior of 4.9%.

In the commerce sector, the items that suffered the most were optics, in the first place, with a decrease of 10%, in second place, were the sectors of the construction materials, hardware and paint stores with a drop of 7.9%. In third place were household appliances with -7.1%, while furniture and home accessories they were in fourth place with a drop of 6.3%.

Regarding the items of services, the travel agency had a decrease of 10.8%, followed by restaurants and sweet shops with a drop of 7.6%. Thirdly, there were real estate with a fall of 5.5%, which were incorporated into the survey for the first time.

The size of the companies shows that the girls fared worse. Microenterprises fell in the second quarter with 9.5%, small ones with 7.6% and the largest ones grew by 2.3%. In this sense, the report concludes that “it is clear that the economic situation in the interior of the country worsened in the second quarter.”
