The crisis has led the EU to prepare new sanctions against Belarus, which he accuses of trying to destabilize the bloc by pushing migrants across the border illegally.
Images shared by a spokesman for the Polish government and the Defense Ministry showed a new escalation of the crisis at the border, where migrants have gathered in increasing numbers on the Belarusian side in the last week.
“Attention, attention, if you do not follow orders, force will be used against you,” said a message over the loudspeaker directed at migrants who were throwing objects, according to the images, which were shown by the public television channel TVP.
In the images shared by Poland, immigrants are also seen throwing bottles and logs at the border fence and Polish soldiers.
The Interior Ministry said a police officer was seriously injured by an object thrown across the border and was in hospital with a suspected skull fracture.
The EU states that Belarus is encouraging immigrants to cross the border in revenge for the sanctions imposed by the crackdown on protests last year against the contested reelection of the president Alexander Lukashenko.
Russia’s ally Belarus said claims that it fueled the border crisis are “absurd.” The Polish Defense Ministry claimed in a tweet that Belarusian authorities gave immigrants sound grenades to be thrown at Polish soldiers and border guards.
Poland said it is discussing whether to launch formal consultations on the crisis with allies of the OTAN.
“We are preparing for a pessimistic outcome: that this conflict could drag on for months,” said spokesman Piotr Muller at a press conference.
