from today the digital census will be enabled again

He National Statistics Institute (INE) will re-enable from today the digital census, with the aim of reaching the largest number of homes in Uruguay under the 2023 census.

Four months have already passed since the first time this new online modality to complete the census form, and from today the possibility will reopen. The reason is that in some urban areas, the census takers went up to five times by the homes without being received.

The truth is that the INE continues to work in the territory to finish the Census 2023, and now it adds this new alternative for those who were not there when the census taker passed by or did not respond to the visit notes left by the workers. The new deadline for the digital census will be extended until September 10. In addition, a campaign will be carried out to encourage the population to complete the form, a modality chosen by the 55% of Uruguayans during its first stage of implementation —one in every two households.

It should be remembered that, in the event that a household does not participate in the national census, it may face fines that go from the 20 Resettable Units (UR) up to 50 UR —in pesos, the amounts are equivalent to between 32,000 and 80,000 pesos.

On the other hand, the first preliminary data of the 2023 Census will be known in October, although there is already information indicating that the population of Uruguay does not exceed 3.5 million.

A population growth that tends to zero

The preliminary data of the 2023 Census who carries on the INE would confirm the projections of specialists that population growth will practically “cease to exist” in the Uruguay.

A few days ago, the president of the state body, Diego Aboalassured the press that population growth is “small” in the country, and that the estimates made in the previous census (2011), which indicated that there should currently be more than 3, would surely not be reached. 5 million inhabitants.

The vision of the head of the INE seems to be shared by the demographer and researcher of the Population Program of the University of the Republic (udelar), Ignacio Pardowho said, in dialogue with Telemundo, that “Uruguay It is a country where population growth is almost going to cease to exist”, so it should not be expected that the Uruguayan population will continue to grow.

“What we expected is a slight population growth from 2011 to 2023. Apparently, this slight growth is going to be milder than expected,” said the demographer.

“What is to be expected is that other changes are processed,” he said, referring to the gradual population agingor changes in territorial distribution or family structures.

“It always seems to us in our intuitions that growing is a symptom of population vitality, but it is not like that,” said the specialist, who added that “in fact, the most prosperous populations are not the ones that see their population grow.” In Uruguay Nor would a migratory impact be reflected.
